Solid Maple Workbench with Dog Holes and Mortise-and-Tenon Joinery

Solid Maple Workbench with Dog Holes and Mortise-and-Tenon Joinery, designed in Mortise from 28 boards of hard maple.

A traditional cabinetmaker workbench design in hard maple, with a 72 × 24 inch work surface at 35 inches high. The 3½-inch-thick laminated top has 33 bench-dog holes in three rows, with 6-inch spacing along each row. Four square legs, shouldered through-tenon stretchers, and mortised side rails form the base. A slatted lower shelf provides accessible tool storage.

The editable Mortise model includes 28 wooden parts, matching mortises and tenons, shelf screws, and figure-8 tabletop fasteners that allow seasonal wood movement. The shelf boards have expansion gaps and individual fixings.

This version does not include a vise or vise mechanism. Select any future vise and confirm its mounting clearances before modifying the bench. Geometry and fastener checks passed in Mortise, but the design has not been physically built or load-tested. Check the top attachments, joint fit, stock quality, and workholding requirements for your intended shop use before construction.

The first three images are AI-generated workshop visualizations based on the model. The final two are actual Mortise render exports.
