Walnut Japanese Platform Bed: Queen Frame with Pinned Timber Joinery

Walnut Japanese Platform Bed: Queen Frame with Pinned Timber Joinery, designed in Mortise from 52 boards of black walnut.

A Japanese-inspired walnut queen platform bed with substantial square timber rails, a tapered solid-wood headboard and exposed wooden corner joinery. Designed around a 60 × 80 inch mattress with a 60½ × 80½ inch opening. Overall dimensions are approximately 71½ inches wide × 93 inches deep × 33½ inches high, including the rear headboard supports.

Nominal 6×6 rails have an actual 5½ × 5½ inch section. The horizontal-grain headboard tapers continuously from 3½ inches thick at the bottom to 1¾ inches at the top. Twenty lift-out walnut slats have eased upper edges and rest on housed side ledgers and a center beam with three support feet. Recessed lower aprons and inset block feet keep the profile low.

The corners use paired through-tenons with removable square wooden pins. These joints and the captive side-apron joints remain dry for disassembly. Concealed screws secure the rear headboard supports; sliding wooden buttons allow the headboard to move seasonally. Remove the headboard before withdrawing the rear corner pins. Select properly dried furniture-grade timber, test-fit joints to the actual stock, and confirm mattress support requirements before building.

This is an advanced woodworking design, not a load-rated or independently certified construction plan. Model checks found no overlapping or floating parts or fastener warnings, and the corner disassembly sequence was checked digitally. A physical prototype and load testing are still required.

The first three images are AI-generated room simulations and may vary in small visual details. The final two are direct Mortise renders of the shared model.
