Adding lumber and sheet goods
Every part in Mortise starts as stock a lumber yard sells: a board of dimensional lumber or hardwood, or a sheet of plywood, MDF or OSB, at its real dressed size. You then cut it down to the part, as you would in the shop.

Add a board
- In the Parts panel, press Add (the plus). The Add stock card opens.
- Keep Lumber picked and choose a species.
- Pick a Nominal size. The actual size is shown beside it, such as 1½ × 3½″ for a 2×4.
- Type a Length, drag it, or press one of the quick lengths: 24, 36, 48 or 96 inches, or 600, 900, 1200 or 2400 mm.
- Press Add board.
The board goes beside the last one you added, in a row that stays in view, and gets a name you can change with Enter. The card remembers your choices while the app is open.
Lumber
In inches the yard is North American: dimensional lumber from 1×2 to 6×6, and hardwood by the quarter, surfaced on both faces. In millimetres it is a European yard of planed timber, named by the section it really is.
The full table of actual sizes is in Lumber sizes and sheet goods.
Species
Twelve woods, each drawn with its own colour and figure and priced by the board foot: SPF, Douglas fir, select pine, western red cedar, pressure-treated, red oak, white oak, white ash, hard maple, yellow birch, black cherry and black walnut. Each card has a note on what the wood is good for. The species also decides how tight it can be steam bent.
Sheet goods
- In Add stock, switch to Sheet.
- Pick a Material: plywood, hardwood ply, veneered MDF, bending ply, Baltic birch, MDF, OSB, particleboard, melamine or hardboard.
- For hardwood ply and veneered MDF, pick the Face veneer: birch, maple, red oak, ash, white oak, cherry or walnut.
- Pick a Thickness and a Sheet size, and press Add sheet.
Thicknesses are the real ones: ¾ inch plywood is 23/32 inch. A sheet comes in as the whole panel; rip and crosscut it down to parts. The shopping list buys whole sheets, and a part too big for a 4 × 8 is bought on the smallest bigger sheet that holds it.
Wide panels and curved parts
There are no glued-up panels, butcher block or bent stock in the yard. A tabletop is boards edge-glued in the model with a glue join, and it then cuts and bends as one blank. A curve is sawn with the outline pen or made by bending.
